Vendicari Reserve

The sun’s glare brings out nature’s colors, away from all the chaos. The turquoise sky merges with the sea blue and the golden sand blends with the colors of the vegetation, including palm trees, large mastic, and reeds. Thyme’s scent is very appealing.

The sea is finally here, followed by the warm wind, sounds of birds, and salt on your skin.

The paths that run along the coast are easy to follow and are interconnected. The Vendicari Reserve stretches from south of Noto to Pachino, and Marzamemi. There are sandy strips that alternate with rocky areas and salty marshes where birds stop on their migrations. Beautiful beaches are available with clear and fine sand. From the north is Eloro Beach. If you cross the Tellaro River mouth, you will see an undeveloped beach, Marianelli. This stretch of beach rises from Mediterranean vegetation. The most well-known beach is Calamosche. It is located towards the south and is situated between two rocky hills with Mediterranean vegetation.

This beauty is worth taking your time and spending at least 2 or 3 days to fully appreciate. Let’s continue our route through the Reserve, driving south on the provincial road. A wooden footbridge crosses a pine forest to bring you to the beach at Vendicari. The beach is a long, sandy bay. The Sveva Tower can be seen on the right, as well as the tuna factories at the sea. To process tuna, the tuna factory was constructed in the eighteenth-century.

The little swamp is now. The environment was ideal for swamps and mires because of the marine area and dampness. The adaptation of plants and animals to high salt levels has led to the development of many species. Swamps are vital for migratory birds from Africa and Northern Europe such as pink flamingos (storks), herons and pink flamingos.

The cultural and anthropological heritage of the Vendicari Reserve extends beyond the tuna factory, Sveva Tower and Sveva Tower dating back to the fifteenth century. The Cittadella Maccari is located in the south. It’s a Byzantine village that dates back to the sixth century. There are also the necropolis and various catacombs. In the north, you will find the Byzantine church Trigona. This church has three apses, and a stone dome that opens to the East.

Here are the routes, flora, fauna, the tuna plant, the Torre Sveva and snorkeling.
