How to get to the Amalfi Coast

Are you trying to find out how to travel to the Amalfi Coast? It can be difficult to reach this beautiful stretch of coastline in Italy without a car. However, there are many public transportation options to get to Sorrento and Amalfi, Positano and other stunning towns along the Amalfi Coast, from Rome or Naples.

For a quick guide to getting to Amalfi Coast, read on. There are a few ways to get there. These are the two main ways to travel to Amalfi by air from Rome or Naples. Although Naples’ Capodichino international airport is the closest to the Amalfi coast, many prefer to fly to Rome because it’s more affordable. Even if you are coming from Italy, such as Florence or Venice to the Amalfi coast, you will need to first get to Rome (or Naples) by train or plane. Depending on your comfort level, time and destination, which transport you choose depends on what is most convenient for you.

Here’s how!

Rome to the Amalfi Coast

These are the main routes to reach the Amalfi Coast from Rome. You can choose to travel by train. The train will take you directly to the Amalfi Coast (by taking the train from Salerno) or you can go to Naples, and then another mode of transportation. These directions will be helpful if you are going to Naples.

By bus from Rome to Positano or Praiano

Summer (from the beginning of June through the end of September): A bus runs from Rome’s Tiburtina station to Positano and Praiano. The depot is located just a few steps from Rome Tiburtina station. Don’t confuse it with the ATAC bus that stops right outside Tiburtina station. It arrives in Positano at 11.30am, and Praiano at 11.45am. Our Insider’s Guide to Positano is a must-read! Time: 4.5 hours. A one-way ticket costs EUR21. Operates: June, July, August, September. You can find the most recent information on pricing and schedule here .

Train from Rome to Naples

You can also take a train between Rome and Naples. The fastest train travels in just over an hour. It is operated by Italotreno and Trenitalia. You’ll need to travel to Naples by a different mode of transportation. See the section below to learn how.

Time to Naples: 1hr and 10 minutes (fastest train). Cost of a one-way ticket to Naples is approximately. EUR4o (less if you book in advance). Operates: year-round.

Train from Rome to Salerno

If you travel to Salerno, you can also take a train directly to the Amalfi Coast from Rome. Our post on Salerno on the Amalfi Coast will help you make a decision.

If you’re traveling to Amalfi Coast towns further south, Salerno can be a great destination, such as Vietri sul Mare or Maiori, Minori, or Amalfi.

Numerous trains run directly from Salerno by both Trenitalia as well as Italotreno.

Time to Salerno is 1 hour 55 minutes (fastest train). A one-way ticket to Salerno costs approximately EUR44. This is less if you book a few days ahead. Operates: year-round.

From Naples, get to the Amalfi Coast

There are many ways to travel to Amalfi Coast from Naples once you have arrived.

Train from Naples to Salerno

You might take a direct train from Naples or Salerno to reach your final destination if you are not in the Amalfi area. It takes less than 40 minutes to travel by train. You can take the SITA Bus from Salerno to reach other Amalfi Coast towns, such as Vietri sul Mare and Maiori, Minori, and Amalfi.

Time to Salerno is 30 minutes (fastest train). A one-way ticket to Salerno costs EUR15 (less if you book in advance). Operates: year-round.

Train from Naples to Sorrento

If you are going to Sorrento, or any other area north of Amalfi then you can take the Circumvesuviana train from Naples Centrale. Look for signs for the “Circumvesuviana” trains, and then buy your tickets at the desk. The main ticket machines that you see are not for Circumvesuviana trains.

Circumvesuviana trains from Naples to Sorrento cost EUR4.10 and take just over an hour. There will be stops on the route. This website gives you the details and schedule.

Time to Sorrento is 1 hour. Cost of a one-way ticket to Sorrento is EUR4.10. Operates: year-round.

Like with Salerno you can also take the SITA bus from Sorrento into the towns along the coast. (Read on our section “Getting from Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast by bus”). This is the cheapest way to get to the Amalfi Coast.

Note: You can take the Alibus from the Capodichino Airport to the main station (Stazione centrale). It departs every 20 minutes from the airport and takes between 20-30 minutes. The ticket costs EUR5. The fixed rate for a taxi is EUR16.

By bus from Naples to Sorrento

A bus takes you directly from Naples’ Capodichino Airport to Sorrento’s Circumvesuviana station. Depending on traffic conditions, the journey takes approximately 1 hour and 15 mins. Buses depart almost every hour, with the first one leaving at 9am and the last at 7:30pm. You can purchase the ticket onboard for EUR10

Time to Sorrento is 1 hour and 15 minutes. Cost of a one-way ticket to Sorrento is EUR10. Operates: year-round.

By bus from Naples to Vietri sul Mare or Salerno

You can also take the bus from Capodichino to Salerno. The one-way ticket costs EUR7, but it only has 4 departure times. Vietri sul Mare is also an option.

By ferry, Naples to Sorrento. Positano and Amalfi.

You can take a ferry from Naples (Moro Belello) to Positano, Amalfi or Alilauro by stopping first in Sorrento.

It takes 40 minutes to get from Sorrento. A one-way ticket to Sorrento costs about EUR12. Operates all year to Sorrento

Note: You can take the Alibus from Capodichino Airport to Piazza Municipio.

Transfers by private or taxi from Naples to the Amalfi Coast

A taxi or private transfer from Naples to Amalfi and Positano is the most cost-effective, but also the fastest option. One-way, this will cost you between EUR120 and EUR150. Taxis from Naples are expected to charge a fixed price, according to the tariff established by Naples.

From Sorrento, get to the Amalfi Coast

Although many people think Sorrento is on the Amalfi Coast, it’s actually not. These transport options will be useful, regardless of whether you are using Sorrento to base yourself or just passing through while on your way towards other Amalfi Coast towns.

By bus, from Sorrento to Amalfi Coast towns

SITA buses run almost every day from Sorrento up to the Amalfi Coast, stopping in Positano and Praiano, as well as other destinations. It is the most convenient way to get to Amalfi Coast as it runs all year.

The bus leaves Sorrento at the final stop. If you want to go to Ravello, or other towns south of Amalfi you will need to change to another SITA bus.

By ferry, Sorrento to Amalfi Coast towns

From Salerno, you can reach other parts of the Amalfi Coast

By bus, Salerno to other Amalfi Coast towns

SITA buses frequently run from Salerno and Amalfi with stops at Vietri sul Mare (Maiori), Minori, Atrani, and Atrani. You might also want to consider the UNICOCostiera integrated tickets if you are planning on visiting other towns along the Amalfi Coast.

Ferry from Salerno to other Amalfi Coast towns

NLG runs a daily ferry between Salerno and Amalfi. It departs at 8.20 AM. It takes 20 minutes and costs EUR8. You can check the website to see any changes in the schedule.
