The Pelagie islands are among the most beautiful islands in Italy. They also boast some of Italy’s best beaches. The three Pelagie islands, Linosa and Lampione, are located off Sicily. They are noted for their beautiful beaches and multicultural heritage. These beautiful islands are located in Sicily, which most people have never heard of.
Where can I find the Pelagie islands?
These islands are the southernmost region of Italy. Although they are closer to North Africa than Sicily, technically the islands are Sicilian. If you keep up with the news, then you have probably heard of Lampedusa, one of the Pelagie islands. This is a popular entry point into Italy from North Africa.
Who should visit the Pelagie Islands?
You’re sure to enjoy water sports and beach life! Lampedusa is all about island life and clear blue waters. The islands are far from the main cities so the beaches here can be more private and quiet than other beaches in Italy.
What are the best things to do on the Pelagie islands
Go to the beach! Lampedusa’s Isola Dei Conigli (“Rabbit Beach”) was recently rated the world’s best beach. Because of its three volcanoes (Monte Vulcano and Monte Rosso), Linosa’s Gaia Pozzolana has beautiful black sand.
You might be able to even go wildlife-watching if you are lucky! The Pelagie islands are home to endangered loggerhead turtles as well as other endangered (and threatened!) animal species.
Looking for some adventure? You might consider scuba diving or exploring the islands to find the perfect beach.
Let’s not forget the other favorite activity in Sicily and throughout Italy, eating! Lampedusa, Linosa, and Linosa offer fresh fish dishes. The islands’ North African influence also means that you will find dishes difficult to find anywhere else in Italy, such as spiced couscous. (Yum! ).
When is the best time to visit the Pelagie Islands?
May through September is the best time. The weather is warm all year, but the smaller islands aren’t very popular in the off-season. There is also not much to do on the islands, and there are not a lot of permanent residents.
In reality, most flights are canceled during winter, and ferry service is less frequent.
How do I get to the Pelagie Islands?
You can either take a ferry to Porto Empedolce in Agrigento (Sicily) or fly to the Lampedusa Airport. You can visit both the main islands. Ferries often run between Linosa and Lampedusa. It takes quite a while to reach the islands so we recommend taking a few days or more to make it worthwhile.
Although the Pelagie islands may not be as easily accessible as those in Italy, we can attest to the fact that their beauty and beaches are worth the effort.
