Windsurfing in Sicily

Is it possible to windsurf in Sicily There are more than 1000km of coastline, so there’s plenty to choose from!

Two daredevils attempted a windsurfing circumnavigation around the island at the end of eighties. They were pushed by only the power of wind, which blew everywhere from north to south and west to west. Some Sicilian windsurf spots have been a reference point for windsurfing enthusiasts from all over the globe since then.

Our Sicilian windsurfing trip starts from Mondello ( Palermo), also known as the Hawaiian spots.

The World Festival on the Beach was held here for many years by the yacht club Albaria. This is a festival dedicated to sailboards. It was attended by Robby Naish (Hawaiian legend and Olympic medalist), as well as other notable Olympic medalists. Riccardo Giordano, nine-time world champion, is in Mondello.

The Magaggiari Beach, located in Terrasini, Palermo, is a popular spot for windsurfing.

Two spots are popular along the southwest coast: the one close to Marsala ( Trapani), also known as The Stagnone. This spot is ideal for beginners, and is called Puzziteddu. It is located near Campobello di Mazara, in contrada Granitola. Because of its marine conditions and weather, it is suitable to practice wave riding. Puzziteddu beach is home to many stages of the Italian windsurfing championship. It has also become a gathering place for fans from all over the globe.

This spot’s success is due to Antonio Cappuzzo, a first generation windsurfer. He loved the beach so much that he built an eco-village and a yacht club to make it a stronghold for windsurfing. Francesco Cappuzzo, Antonio Cappuzzo’s child, was trained in Capo Granitola waters and is currently at the top of the world wave contests.

You will find the beautiful beach at San Leone in the south-east. It is located near Aggento. This is a popular spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing enthusiasts due to its perfect waves.

Two windy places where scirocco blows are located beyond Ragusa at the southernmost tip of the island. They are Pozzallo, and Capo Passero. These beaches are ideal for kitesurfing or windsurfing.

Catania The sposts are La Playa, and close to Catania: Aci Castello.

You can also practice windsurfing near the well-known Taormina. This is along the coast of Sant’Alessio and Nizza di Sicilia where there are various National competitions.

The most popular spot in Messina Strait, where winds are raging is the coast of Tremestieri A Messina.

Windsurfing can be done in the north part of the Island using Tindari or Gioiosa or Brolo.

To the east, Capo d’Orlando serves as the headquarters of Messina territory. We found here a group local experts and extreme conditions, with waves that exceed two meters.

Near Palermo in Cefalu, and Mazzaforno we conclude our circumnavigation for the discovery of Sicilian windsurfing locations. Mazzaforno, the most loved beach for windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts, is also beaten by constant and thermal winds in all seasons and flat water.

The beauty and quality of wine and food are two more things that complete the experience.
