Beaches that are dog- and pet-friendly

It is difficult to bring your pet along, especially to the beach. Sicily is a country that welcomes both dogs and their owners. It has many beaches which allow everyone to enjoy the outdoors and the sea. Let’s find some.

Priolo Gargallo is located near Siracusa. It is a three-kilometer beach with free entry (you only have to pay for parking). Dog owners and dogs are welcome to enjoy the “agility” track and the educational pavilion where classes and games can be organized to enhance the bond between pet and owner.

Every day, competitions and initiatives are held. A water bowl and bag for the dog are provided at the entrance. There is also a bathroom for both dogs and men. If required, assistance with veterinary care will be given.

Messina is where you will find the Lido Vengo Anche Io as well as La Spiaggia di Pluto. Another Bau Bau beach is in Messina . This beach offers a free agility path, shaded areas and shower heads.

Vulcano is located in the Aeolian Islands. Lido Sabbie Nere e Acque Calde is a popular island for its scenic beauty and therapeutic mud. All dogs are welcome and can swim for free.

Castellammare del Golfo is near Trapani and there’s another Bau Beach that you can use in summer.

Catania is where you’ll find the Lido Azurro dog beach.

We recommend that you consult the following list for more information on addresses, contact details, and inquiries about beaches dedicated to our four-legged friends. It is updated annually by Sicilia Turismo Per Tutti ( FB), an association responsible for environmentally friendly and accessible hospitality projects across the Sicilian territory.

VACCINATIONS- Useful to Know – Shifts

It is not required to have a rabies vaccination certificate in Italy, but it is in certain regions. However, it is recommended that you bring along the animal’s card with which the vaccinations were recorded. An International Certificate of Origin and Health must be carried with you if you travel to the USA, Canada or Europe. This certificate will verify that the following: 1) The dog has not been vaccinated against Rabies in the last eleven months or more than twenty-days before, and 2) It has been examined on the date the certificate was issued to confirm that it is healthy. The certificate is valid for 30 calendar days after the date it was issued. Some countries have even more stringent rules. You can find out more information by calling the veterinary department. There are many quarantine periods, which vary by country and during which an animal is taken from its owner and placed in a suitable medical facility. This article explains the Italian laws.

Although all airlines allow the transport of small animals and dogs, each airline has its own rules. It is best to inquire in advance.

Guide dogs for the blind are allowed to board with their owners, but they must be properly placed together.

By boat

It is not difficult to bring your dog on short trips by ship or ferry. However, a certificate of health is required. Boats may have “kennels” or cages on board, where larger dogs must be locked. Smaller dogs cannot walk on deck, but they must be leashed and sleep in the cabin. Some companies also require muzzles.
